Two men were killed and 13 others were injured in shootings across Chicago between Saturday and Sunday mornings, including an attack that left three people wounded outside a bachelor party in Bronzeville in Chicago, according to authorities and witnesses.
In the double homicide, a 20-year-old man and an 18-year-old man were found dead about 10:55 a.m. in the 1800 block of South Throop Street in the Pilsen neighborhood, police said.
They were traveling in a vehicle when they stopped and an assailant fired shots, hitting the older man in the body and the 18-year-old in the neck, police said.
The 20-year-old was identified as Alexis Salgado, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. He was pronounced dead at 11:11 a.m. Saturday.
Police were investigating whether the attack was retaliation for a shooting early Saturday in the Fuller Park neighborhood that injured two men walking out of a liquor store, according to preliminary information from law enforcement sources.
'I saw people running and I started running': Triple shooting near Bronzeville bachelor party
At least three people were shot in a drive-by shooting in the Bronzeville neighborhood on the South Side just before 1:55 a.m., police said. The shooting happened on the sidewalk about half a block away from where a large crowd was gathering inside a barber shop for a bachelor party, according to witnesses.
People were standing outside in the 4500 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue when someone in a car drove by and fired shots, police said. A 32-year-old man was shot in the face, a 25-year-old man was shot in the feet and a 32-year-old man was shot in the buttocks. Each of the men had their conditions stabilized at Provident Hospital of Cook County where they traveled by private vehicle, officials said. Police believe one of the injured men may have fired first, according to preliminary information from a law enforcement source.
A 30-year-old woman, who asked for anonymity because of safety concerns, said about 100 people crammed inside the barber shop and overflowed onto the street during the party.
"It was so hot, people were coming outside to get some air," the woman said.
Two clusters of more than a dozen shell casings littered the sidewalk closer to 45th Street, indicating the shots were fired outside. But the loud bang of gunshots caused panic inside the barbershop.
"The music was found and I didn't hear any shots, but I saw people running and I started running. I ran and hid in a bathroom with others."
"Stuff like this is why I don't really go out to parties enclosed in a house or a barber shop or a club."
2 seriously wounded in East Chatham attempted robbery
Two men were seriously wounded during a robbery attempt in the East Chatham neighborhood on the South Side just after 11:15 p.m., police said. They were standing on the sidewalk in the 7900 block of South Drexel Avenue when four men announced a robbery, and the victims were shot while trying to run away.
A 30-year-old man was taken Stroger Hospital with gunshot wounds to the buttocks, and a 29-year-old man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with gunshot wounds to both legs.
Ida Parish, 56, who lives on the block, said she heard pounding on the back door of the apartment and opened it to discover her godson, the 30-year-old, bleeding.
"He fell on the floor and started sliding to the bathroom to get the blood off of him in the tub," Parish said.
Police asked Parish to remain outside as they processed the inside of her home. About two blocks west of Parish's apartment, officers taped off a portion of the east sidewalk on South Cottage Grove Avenue where blood stained the pavement, near a bus stop and a busy commercial stretch along 79th Street.
That's where the 29-year-old ran after being shot, according to Sophia Ansari, a spokeswoman for the Cook County Sheriff's Department.
Ansari said sheriff's police officers have been working in the 6th district for the past month and they helped save the 29-year-old man's life by rendering aid when the pair were shot.
"One of the victims approached the officers, saying he'd been shot," Ansari said. "They applied a tourniquet and kept pressure on to stop the bleeding," she added, noting the tourniquet was applied to the man's leg.
The sheriff's police officers also called an ambulance for the man and stuck around to help Chicago police with the investigation, she said.
In other shootings:
-A 21-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the leg in the Little Village neighborhood on the West Side just after 5:20 a.m. Sunday, police said. He was standing on the corner in the 2400 block of South Whipple Street when someone inside a black vehicle fired multiple rounds. The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition, police said.
-A man, 24, was shot while in the 2400 block of West Haddon Avenue in Humboldt Park, about 3:45 a.m., police said. The man was on the sidewalk when he heard gunfire and felt pain, officials said. The man drove to Presence St. Mary Medical Center where he was treated for a gunshot wound to his right arm, police said.
-A 28-year-old man was shot in the left shoulder in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side just before 2:50 a.m. Sunday, police said. He was standing on the sidewalk in the 300 block of South Sacramento Boulevard when a gunman came up to him and fired shots. The man went in a private vehicle to Mount Sinai Hospital and then walked out, police said.
-In the South Loop, a 25-year-old man was shot in the right side and hip in a vehicle just after 2:30 a.m. Sunday, police said. The man was sitting in the parked car in the 1900 block of South Wentworth Avenue when someone got out of a black SUV and fired shots. The man appeared to drive to the Central District police station in the 1700 block of South State Street, where a black sedan with its passenger side window shot out was parked. A blood stain in the station's lobby could also be seen and was cordoned off. Police were investigating the shooting as an attempted carjacking, according to preliminary information from a law enforcement source.
-A 44-year-old man was shot by a homeowner while attempting to break into a South Side home in the Bronzeville neighborhood just before 10:55 p.m Saturday., police said. The homeowner told police that the intruder used a crowbar to force his way into his home in the 4500 block of South St Lawrence Avenue when he fired at him. The intruder fled in a vehicle and drove to Mercy Hospital, police said. Shot multiple times, he will be transferred to Stroger Hospital, police said. The homeowner, a 60-year-old man, has a valid FOID card and a concealed carry permit.
-Another shooting happened about 12:45 p.m. in the 4300 block of West Jackson Boulevard. A 32-year-old man suffered a graze wound to the leg and got himself to Loretto Hospital, where he was listed in good condition, police said.
-Earlier Saturday, shortly after 9 a.m. in the same neighborhood, a 26-year-old man was in a vehicle in the 4500 block of West Congress Parkway when he suffered a wound to his face. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized, police said.
No one was in custody and police were investigating.
